A beautiful day for a day trip to Portsmouth NH where I did get to visit the Portsmouth Book & Bar. It was crowded – great to see. With Taylor left in the car, we didn’t stop for a drink but I did score two Christmas presents. Dead Wake: The Last Crossing of the Lusitania by Erik Larson for Brendan. A signed copy! I remembered he had enjoyed Larson’s The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America so I’m sure he’ll enjoy the political maneuverings behind the sinking of the Lusitania. Our trip to Ireland in the spring included a stop in Cobh (formerly Queensland) where we learned the residents of Queensland assisted with saving many passengers from the Lusitania making the book even more meaningful. Brendan has mentioned he prefers a hardcover over his Kindle. Finding Dead Wake, signed and in hard cover for only $9.95 (and no sales tax in NH) was a score!
The second book, The Kid: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams,is a biography of the great, late Boston Red Sox player, Ted Williams. My boss is a Red Sox fanatic. I know he likes to read and every year I like to find a book I think he’ll enjoy, plus a Starbuck’s gift card. This should fit the bill.
One more week to go in my third Module of the Creative Writing class. Perfect timing to wrap up just before Christmas break. Nice that even the online classes line up with the calendar. Good luck to all who still have shopping chores left. I’m on to wrapping and baking! Enjoy the season, and remember to take some time to sit down for a few minutes, curled up with a good book. It’s the gift you can always give yourself.
